San Giljan beat Sirens in the last seconds

Sirens Ritter Sport     8      San Giljan Crystal Finance     9

 (2-0. 3-3, 1-3, 2-3)

It was heartbreak for the Sirens lads. They were in front for most of the encounter, and they denied their opponents time and time again, especially with their able goalie, Nicky Grixti, who played a blinder, but it was not to be, as the Saints literally poached this match from Sirens’ hands in the last seconds of the game.

San Giljan, who were missing Peter Borg, especially in the hole, just couldn’t score from their numerous man ups at first, missing nine from ten, but in the last session they made amends, converting three from five, including the last two in the last minute of the match. Sirens did not fare so well either, scoring two from seven,

These were in the opening session, when Sirens had a double advantage, with the Saints failing to open their scoring account. Sirens went further in front, before San Giljan pulled themselves back, and managed to draw level, only for Sirens to score two more goals, and go in at halftime on a favourable 5-3 score.

After teh break the Saints tied the score again, and although Sirens broke through once more, on a double advantage, San Giljan went into the last quarter on an even score, when they put in a couple of goals, the last one practically in the last second.

Sirens twice went ahead, and they were still in front in the last minute, only for the Saints to overturn the score in their last two man up occasions. Sirens managed a last effort, which was beaten away, and finished up empty handed, which was a cruel ending for them, after their strenuous efforts.

There were no notable scorers in this match, as the goals were well shared among the respective sides.

This victory consolidated San Giljan’s p[osition at the top of the standings.
