San Giljan Salini Resort tame Sirens

San Giljan Salini Resort     9     Sirens Ritter Sport     4

(4-1, 2-0, 2-0, 1-3)

The champions once more managed to tame the St Paul’s Bay outfit, with the game’s final score not giving a true account of San Giljan’s authority in the match. The Saints are back once more, just a point behind the leaders, Neptunes. Sirens were just a pale shadow of the side that drew against Sliema, as they were unable to pierce the solid champions’ defence, even when they had a myriad of opportunities of an extra player in the water. They had a total of fifteen man ups, and only manage three in the last session, with the last two coming in the final minute of play, one of them from a penalty.  The Saints had only three man ups, converting only one of them.

San Giljan established a good lead in the opening session, having Peter Borg, a Boris Vapenski penalty and Matthew Zammit scoring for them. Zak Mizzi pulled a goal back for Sirens, but Paul Fava restored the champions’ three goal advantage. In the second period Sirens’ deficiences in their man ups cost them dear, with San Giljan opening up their lead, scoring two more goals, from Dino Zammit and another Vapenski penalty. The same Vapenski also had another penalty, but shot straight into Nicki Grixti’s chest, in teh Sirens’ goal. At the interval the champions were 6-1 ahead.

After the break the tale of missed man ups continued for Sirens, failing four more, with the three they had mised in the previous session. San Giljan had Clint Mercieca and matthew Zammit taking their side to an 8-1 winning margin. In teh last period it was isiah riolo finally scoring from a man up, for Sirens. Dino Zammit replied for San Giljan, then three more missed man ups, before Sergi Mora stepped up for Sirens, given some late freedom, from the close attention he was given by Vapenski. Mora scored twice, the first from a penalty, giving a different slant to the final score, as opposed to what actually happened in the game.
