San Giljan boys prominent in Malta’s triumph in EU Juniors Nations Cup

San Giljan boys Darren Zammit, Ben Grech, Thomas Micallef and Tristan Said formed part of the Malta’s under-17 water polo team which won the EU Nations Cup for Juniors held in Vienna.

The Maltese national team won gold  at the 2016 Nations Cup  after beating South Africa 11-10 in the final match.

Malta’s goal scorers included Darren Zammit Cutajar Mikhael, Jacob Sciberras, Zerafa Jerome Gregory, Matthias Azzopardi and Ben Grech. Our own Darren Zammit wa salso Captain of the Team

In a tweet, the Prime Minister congratulated coach Karl Izzo and the Maltese team for their success.

Aquatic Sports Association president Joe Caruana Curran said: ‘The investment made by the association in the past few years is guaranteeing a bright future for water polo at senior level in the years to come as a number of our young athletes will be the backbone of squads yet to come. Karl Izzo, Anthony Farrugia and Adrian Cachia deserve all the praise for their incessant hard work. The clubs who have nurtured the players over the years have done a fantastic job in providing the national team with great material. The parents of the players, a number who have made this trip, deserve thanks for their continued support to their boys.’
